Sudan’s RSF demands big ransom for release of healthcare workers
The hostages, comprising four doctors, a pharmacist, and a nurse, had been providing medical care to the wounded during the ongoing siege of Al-Fashir before being taken by RSF and allied forces.
In its statement, the Sudan Doctors’ Network said the RSF is asking for 100 million Sudanese pounds (approximately $167,000) per doctor to secure their freedom, holding the militia fully responsible for the captives’ safety.
“We affirm that this is an organized criminal act aimed at destroying what remains of the healthcare system in Darfur and intimidating humanitarian workers,” the network stated.
Human rights groups have urged the World Health Organization and other international humanitarian agencies to intervene immediately, emphasizing the severity of targeting medical personnel.
The abductions followed the RSF’s recent claim of full control over Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur Province, and the Sudanese Armed Forces’ Sixth Infantry Division command, according to militia sources.
