Infantry Regiment Medics Sweep Fort Campbell’s Grueling "Best Medic" Competition

Combat medics from the historic 187th Infantry Regiment swept the top spots at Fort Campbell’s annual Best Medic Competition.

The grueling event, which concluded Oct. 15, 2026, pushed the elite medical soldiers to their limits through a series of tactical, navigation and trauma care challenges designed to replicate the chaos of a modern battlefield.

Spc. Nelson Beltran and Spc. Jonathan Santisteban, assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment "Iron Rakkasans," captured first place.

Finishing a close second were Sgt. Lucas Crebbin and Sgt. Johnathan Simpson, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment "Leader Rakkasans."

The annual competition is designed to test soldiers on more than just basic first aid. Competitors must perform complex life-saving medical procedures under simulated artillery fire, navigate dense woodland in total darkness and march miles carrying heavy combat gear.

Both teams will now prepare to represent the storied 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at the Army-wide Best Medic Competition scheduled for early next year.

The two teams will be formally recognized by senior base leadership next month during the Commanding General’s Quarterly Awards. The ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 19, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. inside the Division Headquarters Atrium at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
